Fair Kate is the current music project from Nova Scotia based singer-songwriter, Kate Varsava.  The folk-inspired melodies of her most recent work edge into new Americana and indie rock, eliciting deep questions of life, creation, and growing up. Her haunting vocals conjure a sense of ancestry and draw the listener into etheric realms. With inspiration drawn from artists like Gillian Welch and Basia Bulat, the soundscapes of this current work draw from the 70s soft rock wave, offering a sense of timelessness held together with raw and unexpected production.

Having spent a decade hosting small and large scale community song circles, and the last fifteen years practicing traditional midwifery, Kate has found endless inspiration in the people she has sat knee to knee and heart to heart with, the mothers she has held across the threshold into motherhood, and a vastly diverse social web built from attending women’s festivals and birth conferences around the world.   

“Music is mostly a revelatory practice for me, opening my own consciousness to greater self awareness and healing, just as much as it is an offering to others to feel deeply into themselves and their own experiences of life.”

In October 2025 Fair Kate released the first single, Shimmer, from her upcoming EP, scheduled to be released in Fall 2026.  She currently resides in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia in a 200-year old house on the sea, and is wrapping up production at Cat Island Studio.
